Rack PDUs are part of the critical distribution path. Their usefulness depends on safe electrical matching, meaningful visibility and maintainability—not simply the number of network features on a product sheet.
Start with electrical compatibility
Before considering intelligent features, confirm supply voltage, phase arrangement, frequency, input plug or hardwired connection, upstream protective device and rated current. Map connected equipment power supplies to outlet connector types and quantities, including C13 and C19 where applicable. Verify the installed distribution architecture against the selected PDU specification and local design requirements.
- Build a load and outlet schedule for each rack.
- Match branch protection and input to the upstream supply.
- Check mechanical mounting, cord routing and service clearance.
Understand feature definitions
Basic PDUs distribute power without integrated network metering. Metered solutions may provide local or remote electrical measurements; monitored offerings vary by level of metering and alarm capability. Switched PDUs can control supported outlets remotely, but not every model offers per-outlet metering or switching. OEM terminology differs, so compare an explicit feature matrix rather than assuming labels mean the same thing.
- Check input versus branch versus outlet metering.
- Verify whether switching is per outlet or by group.
- Confirm alarms, outlet naming and supported protocols.
Design for manageability and risk
Networked PDUs need IP management, authentication, firmware processes, power restoration behaviour and role-based permissions. Dual-corded devices may use A and B paths; avoid placing both on one underlying failure domain. Consider whether outlet switching is appropriate for the attached IT equipment and which team is authorised to issue commands.
- Separate management networks as appropriate.
- Document access, firmware and credential procedures.
- Test recovery, alert and power-restore configurations.
Compare lifecycle evidence
For each shortlisted model, record India availability, OEM documentation, warranty terms, management interface, sensor support and spares policy. Compare products against the same electrical and monitoring requirements. An enquiry-ready comparison sheet should show deviations, not hide them behind a single overall score. Confirm specifications for the exact suffix and revision before ordering.
- Save manufacturer datasheets and revision dates.
- Compare like-for-like electrical configurations.
- Document installation, testing and handover scope.
